Tierney earns Eagle Scout

Senior Jonathan Tierney, a member of local Boy Scout Troop 113, earned his Eagle Scout on Dec. 20.
The Eagle Scout Award is the highest and most coveted rank in scouting, the last major step in the advancement program. Less than two percent of all scouts in the United States reach the Eagle rank. In order to do so, scouts must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges and carry out a community service project.
For his community project, Tierney built benches and a nature trail behind the soccer fields at the YMCA's Grizzard Park, where he played Arsenal soccer for a number of years. He built two benches and planted drought resistant greenery so future generations of YMCA campers can enjoy the trail.
“Grizzard Park gave me a lot of good memories and a lot of good friends,” Tierney said. “So I asked Scott McCreless at the YMCA what I could do to help, and he told me he wanted to have this nature trail for campers.”
In the summer of 2010, Tierney traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico where he backpacked over 100 miles. At school, he participates on the cross country and soccer teams, and is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, Tri M Honor Society, Concert Choir and the a cappella men's group, Random Notes. He achieved the distinction of AP Scholar with Honors in 2011. Tierney will attend Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall.
He is the son of Liz and John Tierney of Rome.
