Thurmond named finalist in Vincent J. Dooley Award competition

Senior Emily Thurmond has been named a finalist in the Vincent J. Dooley Award competition, sponsored by Athletes for a Better World in partnership with GHSA.
“We are so proud of Emily for making it this far in the competition," said Athletic Director Bob Stinchcomb. "She certainly epitomizes the values promoted by this competition -- character, teamwork and citizenship."
As a finalist, Thurmond will compete with athletes from throughout the State of Georgia for a four-year, $1,000 per year college scholarship, which will be presented this spring. Only one male and one female scholarship winner will be selected; these students will also receive $1,000 to donate to a nonprofit organization of their choice. The winners will be announced on April 5.
Thurmond is a captain and four-year member of the varsity softball team, a four-year member of the varsity tennis team, and a four-year member of the varsity swim team. She has received All-Area and All-Region honors in softball and was MVP in swimming. She is also a recipient of the Kipp-Tillman Award for athletics. A graduate of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce's High School Leadership Rome Program, Thurmond currently serves as head day prefect of Regester House, president of the "Y" Cabinet as well as a spiritual life liaison. She is also a member of the Darlingtones and the Concert Choir and has auditioned twice for popular reality TV show "American Idol." Thurmond is an active member of St. Peter's Church and enjoys serving her community. She is the founder of "Music for McHenry," which has helped purchase instruments for students at McHenry Primary School. She is the daughter of Beverly and Mike Thurmond of Rome.
