Through the Eyes of a Tiger: An Interview With Mr. McDurmon

I recently sat down with Kelly McDurmon, American History teacher at the Upper School, to discuss his experience at Darlington. Mr. McDurmon has been teaching at Darlington since 2004. He currently teaches regular and AP U.S. History. He also coaches wrestling and assists with varsity cross country. Mr. McDurmon holds a B.A. from Berry College. All of his children, Ansley (’12), Anne Marie (’15), Rhett (’19) and Luke (’21), studied or still study at Darlington.

What is your favorite thing about Darlington?

I enjoy the students. I like how idealistic they are, looking forward for college, becoming somebody. I like how motivated they are and that they are interested in high levels of achievements. I also like how they are motivating each other to always give their best.

Why do you like coaching at Darlington?

I like when students that are motivated in classroom are also motivated athletically. I like the hard-working students and athletes at Darlington. I like pushing kids to achieve more than they would ever think they could, pushing them to reach their potential. I also appreciate the high quality of the facilities we have at Darlington.

Why did you decide to become a history teacher?

I was inspired to become a teacher by my mother, who also was a teacher. I chose history because I always enjoyed studying the past in order to understand the future.

How has going to Darlington affected your children?

It exposed them to more intellectual pursuits. The level of their learning has been uplifted by their teachers. They have had the opportunity to work with better technology which gave them a real 21st Century education. I also appreciate the international community here at Darlington, which both of my daughters consider to be their favorite part of their high school experience at Darlington.

If you had to give your students one piece of advice, what would that be?

Never settle for less than your best.
