Things to Come in Fine Arts Next Year

The 2014-15 school year is over. Your summer has begun. Practicing piano, violin or singing, drawing or painting, even writing is probably not on your to-do list unless you are Abraham Johnson ('15) whom I hear is writing a ton this summer.
So those of us who spent a lot of our spare time creating art, making music, even writing are taking the summer off…I hope not!
With so many accomplishments in the arts at Darlington in 2014-15, I hope that many of you are continuing in your various forms of expression and even finding something new to experience and enjoy.
When we get back in August, it will be time to pick up those pencils and paint brushes and dive right in again. It will be time to get that instrument out and warm up and get things going. I challenge you to keep your creative juices flowing and send us some updates as you accomplish some of your goals this summer.
Fine Arts will be hopping again next year with some new opportunities that will allow for continued exposure to artistic experience that provides opportunity for expression. Our goal is to make sure that every student is presented with something new and allowed an opportunity to create or be a part of creating art. This happens in pre-kindergarten all the way through our senior class in all areas of performing arts, media arts and visual arts. We are excited to continue many offerings next year in all of these areas and will keep you posted on upcoming events and experiences that students will be engaged with in the fall.
The fall of 2015 will bring many exciting opportunities for students to try new things and reengage in the programs they enjoy in Fine Arts at Darlington.
Mrs. Shelley Daniel will be joining our faculty to lead the theatre program for grades 6-12. She will bring energy and excitement to the experience that many of you have had in the theatre program or will look to begin in the fall. You will be receiving specific information later in the summer regarding auditions and opportunities for participation in any and all productions that will be scheduled.
The Fall Play is "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen, with performances scheduled for Oct. 15-17, 2015, at the Black Box Theatre. "A Doll’s House" is a full-length period drama and one of the most famous plays ever written. Penned in 1879, it became the world's most performed play by the early 20th century.
The Winter Musical is "Little Shop of Horrors" and will take place Feb. 5-7, 2016, with a location TBA. "Little Shop of Horrors" is a deviously comic horror-rock musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman. It has devoured the hearts of audiences for over 30 years and has become one of the most popular shows in the world.
The Spring Play is "The Curious Savage" by John Patrick, and will take place April 21-23, 2016, at the Black Box Theatre. "The Curious Savage" is a full-length, contemporary and fanciful comedy highlighting the virtues of integrity, compassion and generosity. It is one of Dramatists Play Service’s most successful plays.
**Auditions for "A Doll’s House" will be held Monday, Aug. 17 and Tuesday, Aug. 18. Prepared monologues will be part of the audition process. Audition applications and monologues will be available from Mrs. Daniel later this summer. An email will be sent out providing instructions for receiving these items.
