The Last 42 Days of Lower School

Spring is here; the days are growing longer; the tulips are blooming; baseball season is in full swing; children are laughing and running in the sunshine. We had an eventful March with pre-kindergarten presenting “A Day in Pre-K” for the Lower School. Third grade worked very hard on creating and performing in their Wax Museum. We had a large turnout for Donuts for Dads; we thank Lauren Sklar for organizing. I hope that all of you enjoyed your Easter weekend and are gearing up for a busy final two months on our Thornwood Campus. 

Fourth grade will be holding their annual science fair on Thursday, April 11, from 8 a.m. to noon in the gym. These Super Scientists have been hard at work with their Awesome Assistants (a.k.a. their parents) going through the steps of the Scientific Method in their labs at home. Please come listen to the scientists as they discuss their projects under the guidance of Mrs. Sirmans.

On April 8, all of our Lower School library books will be packed up and moved over to the main campus. We are asking that all children return their books this week in order for Mrs. Glass to complete her inventory. Students will continue having their weekly library time for storytelling, and classroom inventories will remain intact for students to read and take home.

Grand Special Day and the Lower School’s Spring Concert will take place on Friday, April 12. We invite all grandparents and special friends to attend! Ms. Henry and all of the students have been singing and playing away as they put together a fabulous musical performance. Please look for details and a special invitation coming soon!

Stacy Albers is organizing the Scholastic Book Fair on April 15-19. The hours are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday 8 to 11 a.m. Tuesday will be Family Night from 5 to 8 p.m. They will do a special preview on Grand Special Day, April 12, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Fourth grade will participate in ERB testing during the week of April 22.

On April 24, Willie Weir, an adventure cyclist who has traveled over 60,000 miles around the world on his bike, will be here to discuss his very exciting travels. His presentation is being sponsored by Bike! Walk! Northwest Georgia and Safe Routes to Schools.

Grades PK-4 will be attending the Floyd County Special Olympics on Thursday, April 25, at our own Jerry Sharp Field. Darlington's freshman class is once again hosting these special athletes and we need many cheerleaders on the field! The Parade of Athletes begins at 10 a.m. with opening ceremonies to follow and games begin at 10:30. Our students will be helping to prepare for the games, along with encouraging the participants to do their best! You will receive details closer to the event.

On Friday, April 26, at 6 p.m., Darlington will hold its annual Light the Lake event on the Upper School campus. The event, which directly supports the Rally Foundation, is both a celebration of the survivorship of seniors Madeline Gaffney and Jordan Muschamp, and a remembrance of those who have lost their lives to cancer. This 12-hour event features music, food, games, luminaries, candles, crafts, a Walk of Honor and lots of fun! T-shirts for this event are now on sale. We will kick off our Light the Lake event, which raises awareness about cancer, with an assembly on April 17.Upper School students, along with fourth-graders, will be explaining its impact on our community and encouraging everyone to attend. 

First grade will present their play, “Character Matters,” on Tuesday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in the gym.

We are busy getting in shape with Beth Smith for the Tri for Kids on May 5, and we hope that your family plans on joining us! The race will take place on Darlington’s main campus and all proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Georgia. Group practices are on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays each week in April. Parents are welcome to participate in the practices and needed for supervision.
