The King and I show goes on

Opening on Feb. 8 and running through Feb. 10, the Darlington Fine Arts department presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I as this year’s musical. The cast includes over 75 Darlington students representing all three schools and ranging in age from five to 18 years old. “The students are all wonderful performers and have brought a tremendous amount of talent and enthusiasm to the production,” said Marisa Ortega, production director and Darlington Players director.
Performances will be on Friday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Feb 10 at 3 p.m. Tickets are available from the Fine Arts Booster Club for $10 for the general public and $5 for students, children, and senior citizens. To order tickets, call the Darlington Voice Mail line at 706-802-4365, extension *598. Tickets will be available for pick-up at the Darlington receptionist’s desk in the Administration Building, or may be picked up at the Rome City Auditorium at least 30 minutes prior to the performances.
Ortega has been assisted in coordinating this production by Dan Bishop, choral director; Diane Lumpkin, Lower School lead teacher; Kim Tunnell, Middle School chorus teacher; Bill King, music director; Mark Hoven, set design and construction; Georgie Hall, choreography; and Angela Flannigan, vocal trainer.
The classic tale of The King and I is based on the true story of an English schoolteacher who travels to Siam to educate the many children of the King. The King is a proud and determined man who has met his match in Anna Leonowens. The story of their relationship is funny, warm, and tragic. The production is being performed on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rodgers.
