Alumni rolling into town for Centennial Alumni Weekend should pack their dancin’ shoes and get ready to jam to the classic bluegrass sound of The Biscuit Burners, an acoustic group from Asheville, N.C. The band will perform Friday, Oct. 7, at the Pre-Game Picnic.

The Biscuit Burners, whose lead singer, Shannon, also happens to be the daughter of Tom and Margo Whitworth, finished 2004 with several outstanding accolades. They were recently showcased at the International Bluegrass Association Conference, their debut album “Fiery Mountain Music” appeared in the Chicago Tribune’s Top Ten Bluegrass Albums of the Year and their song “Come On Darlin” was chosen as the IPOD Hot Pick Bluegrass Song of the Year.

Even Joe Perry of the classic rock band Aerosmith and Dave Higgs of Nashville Public Radio and the nationally syndicated Bluegrass Breakdown are fans of the band.

“[They have] managed, to my ears anyway, to come up with their own arrestingly captivating sound-a sound that includes the old-time feel of the moutnains, but incorporates many of the elements of hard-driving bluegrass as well,” said Higgs. “Their powerful and heartfelt vocals, beautiful harmonies and blistering picking make for the perfect backdrop to some killer originals.”

Not only do The Biscuit Burners take their music to America’s finest venues, they also take their knowledge and passion to schools across America. In early 2004, the group began an Appalachian Roots Music Schools Program, in which they present the heritage of mountain music along with its techniques and etiquette. Their presentations range from history lessons to instructional lessons and are customized for students in kindergarten through high school.

“The Biscuit Burners are so excited to be a part of this special anniversary for Darlington,” said Shannon Whitworth. “We are also thrilled to share our Appalachian culture music program with the students. The School and community have made my folks very welcome, and I am honored to be part of such a wonderful celebration.”

The Biscuit Burners are made up of Shannon Whitworth (clawhammer banjo, acoustic guitar, vocals), Mary Lucey (acoustic bass, vocals), Bill Cardine (resphonic guitar, vocals) and Dan Bletz (acoustic guitar).
