Tennis teams beat Walker to finish second in Region

The boys (13-5) and the girls (10-9) tennis teams have had successful seasons this spring. Both finished second to Walker in the Region tournament and will play the first round of the State Tournament next week. The boys team will play against Wilkinson County and the girls against Monticello.
The boys team has had good wins against perennial powers Lovett (twice), and Pace, and within the Region as well against Calhoun. “Michael Schecter is a fighter who never gives up,” Head Coach Carlos Ortega said. “As a freshman he has played some tough tennis as our number one.” Ollie Graedtke from Germany has played consistently this season at number two singles and has only lost twice as have Stan Ingram and Greg Phillips, who have dominated the competition at number one doubles, according to Ortega.
The girls enjoyed a very exciting 3-2 victory over Pace at the Buckhead Rotary Tournament after losing to them earlier in the season, 4-0. The girls also defeated Calhoun twice. “Sophomore Mary Katherine Ashmore has taken the responsibility of playing number one seriously and has improved her game tremendously,” Ortega said. She had the decisive win against Pace. “Junior Mary Becca Watson has been solid and steady as our number three player and Mary Kate Watson, also a junior, and Alicia Wright, a freshman, our number one doubles, have played better every match.”
