Temple Leads Outstanding Atlanta Phonathon Efforts

With confidence, commitment, fervor, and strong communications, Bill Temple ’90 led the Atlanta phonathon efforts to new record-breaking heights, raising $29,001 for the 2000–2001 Annual Fund and $2,520 in class endowment funds. Funds totaling $31,521 were achieved over three days of volunteer work. Gloria Eberhart, development office database/MIS manager, who has been with Darlington for 32 years, does not recall a more successful Atlanta phonathon. On record, a four-day phonathon event in 1999 is the closest challenger with a sum of $14,930.
“I think a number of factors contributed to the success of the Atlanta Alumni Phonathon. Bill Temple and his three captains (Mary Kay McGuffey ‘90, Ron Mixon ‘88, and Luke Barton ‘91) provided strong leadership and recruited volunteers who shared their positive experience at Darlington. The last night they had around 24 callers,” said Mary Norton, gift officer for annual giving. “Bill also communicated via e-mail the results of each night to everyone who participated so they had a real sense of accomplishment toward reaching their goal. They wanted to beat the previous three years.”
The event, held in mid-September, was conveniently located in a conference room at Robinson Humphrey, due to the generosity of Board of Trustee member Robert Glenn ’60, executive vice-president at Robinson Humphrey.
Other contributors to the success of the fundraiser: incentives. Volunteer Lisa White ’90 brought ribs from The Rendezvous, the oldest and best-known rib joint in Memphis, Tenn.; Norton arranged to have a neck and shoulder masseuse at the event; and each night top fundraisers were acknowledged. Camaraderie, fun, food, and massages –all the while benefiting Darlington.
