Repetitive stress injury (RSI) and eye strain are common ailments among computer and excessive technology users. Many don't know that with just one easy step this can be prevented. Many eye doctors believe that if you practice the 20-20-20 rule, eye strain can be prevented.
The 20-20-20 rule suggest that after every 20 minutes, the technology user should take a break for at least 20 seconds and look at objects that are 20 feet away.
Computers and phones actually have apps you can install to help you remember. Time Out is a great "Free" app for the mac that will gently remind you to take a few minutes away from your technology to rest. Windows has a handy tool called EyeDefender has popup reminders to encourage you to rest those eyes.
Some other tips for improving your physical workspace with eye strain in mind--for example, moving your monitor just below eye level. This can help the eye focus quicker and reduce strain.
It's just these simple steps we can take to improve our physical well being as we add more and more technology to our daily lives.
