Teachers named to Who’s Who

Each year, approximately 134,000 educators are featured in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. However, since nominations are limited to high school students, elementary teachers rarely receive this honor. Only 18 percent of this year’s Who’s Who recipients teach students from kindergarten through fifth grade, and retired Lower School Barbara Cordle is one of them.
Cordle, whose bio appears in the eighth edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers 2003-2004, began teaching at the Lower School in 1974. In 24 years, she taught third grade; fifth and sixth grade Social Studies; and fourth, fifth and sixth grade Language Arts.
“Both of my children had Mrs. Cordle for third grade, and my feeling is that she always held them accountable, made them think and honed their writing skills, all of which have served them well, both in college, and in my older son’s case, in teaching afterward,” said Lea Duncan, assistant director of admission for the Lower and Middle Schools.
Former co-worker Terri Waters, third grade teacher, called Cordle energetic, caring and nurturing.
“Barbara is one of those people who loves people and is always genuinely interested in former students and their families,” said Watters. “She loved teaching, and teaching loved her. I am proud to have been her partner for so many years.”
Cordle said it was her hope to instill in children a love for learning; to encourage initiative, imagination, ingenuity and independence in their learning experiences; to become responsible in every aspect of their lives; to try to do their best at all times; and to help them be proud of their accomplishments, large or small.
“As a retired teacher, I get reinforcement from former students who are now young adults when they discuss their applications to their every day life,” said Cordle. “Teaching the economic unit called ‘Mini-Society’ in fifth and sixth grades was my biggest challenge and joy. Hearing how my former students have applied those economic experiences in their present lives is such an exciting feeling.”
Since her retirement, Cordle has been a storyteller and a substitute teacher. She is a member of the Board of the Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center and president of the Phoenix Group. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennesee (Knoxville) and a Master of Edcuation from Texas Christian University.
Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers honors educators nominated by students from Who’s Who Among America’s High School Students, Who’s Who Among America’s High School Students – Sports Edition and students honored in The National Dean’s List.
Other Darlington teachers appearing in this year’s Who’s Who listing are Betsy Awsumb, Ancient World History and ESL teacher; John Cox, English IH and III teacher; Rob Davis, AP Humanities and Graphic Design teacher; Julia Dodd, Chemistry II and AP Chemistry teacher; Tim Garrett, Physics I and II teacher; Raymond Murray, English IIH and IV teacher and Kathy O'Mara, Art teacher.
