Swimmers take their marks

Darlington swimmers and divers are ready to make a big splash at their first varsity meet Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Huffman Center.
According to Coach Rob Meaney, the teams are made up of advanced swimmers, as well as some newcomers, which he feels is great.
“My goal is for them to come together as a team and support one another the best they can,” he said. “Plus, I want them to come away from each practice and meet knowing they learned something.”
After attending the World Swimming Championships this summer and listening to some of the coaches talk, Meaney feels that each swimmer should have a goal, whether it be in athletics, academics or real life.
“Of course we’ll always have our ups and downs, but that goal is something we must have to keep us working toward something,” he said. “I always tell my athletes to keep their heads up and never give up. At the same time, I want them to have fun, because having fun means working hard towards their goals and supporting their teammates.”
Meaney urges his swimmers to “act like Olympians” and “do their best each and every day.”
“I say to my swimmers, ‘If you have a lane, you have a chance’ or ‘Hard work beats talent when talent is not working hard,’” Meaney said. “There’s nothing wrong with trying to improve or be better; that’s why we’re here learning to be better athletes, students and human beings.”
