Swimmers Compete in State

Darlington’s swim team ended the season at the state competition in Gainsville, Ga., Saturday, February 19.
Sarah McCoy, Jordan Bray, Bassant Zeitoun, and Vera Kaufmann competed in the 200-yard freestyle relay where they swam a 1.54.27. They had hoped to break the Darlington record of 1.53.10 but were unable to achieve the goal.
McCoy, Bray, Zeitoun, and Molly Matthews competed in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming a 2.08.95. The relay team had been flirting with the qualification time all season but did not legally qualify until the last meet of the season.
“While in Gainsville, the lady Tigers swam well,” Head Swim Coach Ana O’Beirne said. “The state team is so appreciative to Tom Sorci who was instrumental in the organization of the trip but was not able to attend the meet. We have such a strong, supportive team. Swimmers never ceased to encourage and cheer one another on.”
The diving team was small but mighty. Blake Cescutti had an undefeated season, Megan Bevill ended her first season impressively with a win over Holy Innocents and Landmark, and Phil Parnaham developed into a strong contender this winter. Head Diving Coach Pat Wadell reported that even though Merrie Carol Angell saw limited action, she broke the school record this season. She now holds both the 11-dive and 6-dive records.
