The Darlington swim team excelled in their first invitational meet of the season last Saturday, placing 4th combined (girls were 5th and boys were 8th) out of 11 teams at the Tiger Plunge in Adairsville.
The team was led by the girls’ 200 freestyle relay team, which placed 2nd with a time of 1:54.52. They are very close to the State qualifying time of 1:54.00. The last time a Darlington girl qualified for State was 2007.
That team is made up of Emily Thurmond, Anna Grace Rutledge, Melissa Picon and Kristi Hicks. Those four girls placed well in their individual events also. Picon was 3rd in the 200 freestyle and 5th in the 500 freestyle. Rutledge placed 3rd in the 100 breaststroke and Hicks was 3rd in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Also finishing in the top-3 was the girls’ 200 medley relay team made up of Rutledge, Hicks, Thurmond and Lauren Chin. The final top-3 finish was Dillon Weeks in the 100 freestyle.
The Darlington swim and dive teams will be in action this Thursday against Woodland and Cass. They are hosting their first home meet of the season at 5:30 p.m. in the Huffman Center.
