Summer Reading: 'Where Am I Wearing'

Have you ever wondered where your clothing was made?  Probably not.  We all get dressed every day and probably take for granted the items we wear on our backs.  Kelsey Timmerman, however, did notice his clothing labels and decided to pursue their origins.  His book, Where Am I Wearing, details Timmerman’s travels to Latin America and China as he explores where his T-shirt, underwear and flip-flops were made.  His search not only reveals unfavorable factory conditions, but also tells the story of the young people who are employed in these manufacturing facilities. 

 

This summer, rising 9th grade students will read Where Am I Wearing as the required summer reading book.  The Summer Reading Committee selected this book hoping to expose students to world issues that they might not have thought about before.  Mr. Timmerman’s book is powerful and inspiring and yet it’s written in a way that should motivate students to want to read about issues outside of Darlington.  At times, the book deals with some adult themes, but our committee feels that the themes are in context with the all-important message of understanding our neighbors -- whether here in Georgia or across the world.  We encourage parents to read the book as well and discuss its powerful message with their children over the dinner table or in the car while traveling on vacation.  Once students return to school in the fall, each advisee group will create a digital project that will teach group members new technology skills while also allowing individuals to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the book.

 

The most exciting opportunity that our students will have with this book, though, is the chance to hear Mr. Timmerman speak on Tuesday, Oct. 9 (location TBD).  Rome’s One Book/Many Voices Committee has secured a speaking event for Mr. Timmerman in our community, and we are excited that our students will be able to connect with the author in person.  Darlington will provide transportation for those who need it, and all -- both parents and students alike -- are encouraged to attend.
