Summer Reading Incentive Program for Rising PK-8 Students
By Liz Overberg - FF/S
Attention Darlington Tigers entering grades PK-8!
Do you love reading? How would you like to be rewarded for the reading that you do this summer? You heard me right, kids--rewarded. For reading! You know all that reading you do sitting by the pool, on the beach, or in your bunk at camp? Now it will earn you fabulous prizes! Plus you have to read for summer homework anyway, so why not be rewarded for it?
All you have to do is keep track of the days over the summer when you read for at least twenty minutes. It’s that simple!
You can read whatever you want to read, as long as you’re reading. Fiction and nonfiction books (including graphic novels), short stories, poetry, magazines, and newspapers will all count toward your twenty minutes per day.
Here’s what I’m offering:
-
For 30 days of reading: A Tiger Day
-
For 45 days of reading: A mystery bag of goodies (and a Tiger Day)
-
For 60 days of reading: A pizza party (and the Tiger Day and bag of goodies)
And, in addition to winning a Tiger Day, a mystery bag, and a pizza party, (and not to mention all the awesome education and vocabulary building you will get from so much reading!), all those students who read at least 60 days this summer will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 iTunes gift card.
The program officially starts on June 1st. You can keep track of your reading on the printable summer calendar that can be accessed here. Please bring your calendar with you when you come back to school in August.
If you are looking for ideas of great books to read this summer, check out these lists of suggested books, put together by Mrs. Overberg and Mrs. Glass.
This information is also available on the summer reading page here on our website. If you have any questions about this program, please feel free to email Mrs. Overberg (or have your parents email her) at Loverberg@darlingtonschool.org. (Just don’t try to get her to reveal what’s in the mystery bag--she's not telling!)
Have a wonderful, fun-filled summer!
