Summer Reading Already?

The summer reading required book selection process is a lengthy one. Several faculty members from our Summer Reading Committee began reading selections in October and will continue to read until a list of books have been compiled.

Our committee decided last year to consider the following as we constructed our summer reading list:

 

• A summer reading book must promote the pure enjoyment of reading. 
• We hope to promote a positive reading experience for our students that might hook them as future readers.
• It’s important that the summer reading book is not too difficult requiring the help of teachers to understand its content. 
• By providing choices, we help to ensure that all readers find a book that relates or interests them, ie. gender of protagonist, different genres

We had such success with this model that our plans are to continue with the same considerations for next summer's books.

We have also created a survey for our students so we can get their feedback about last year's summer reading choices. In this survey, we will be asking students for book suggestions so that they will have a voice in what selections the committee looks at including. This survey will be going out to students within the next week or two.

Once our committee narrows down its findings into a list of 7-10 books, we will provide the students with a brief synopsis of each book and allow them to vote for their favorite choices. We will finally announce our summer reading selections in May.
