Summer provides students chance to serve

“How did you spend your summer vacation” –is an all-too familiar question asked to students for generations. Today, students do more than the usual poolside routine, soap opera obsessions, and summer reading list avoidance. Some take advantage of the time to explore the world outside comfort zones and serve others.
Juniors Ellen Collier, Laura McGuire, and Erin Euler spent one June week in rural Guatemala as missionaries with Second Avenue Baptist Church, Rome. The group traveled to Pasabein, Guatemala to work with children in the area. Laura McGuire spent her days with over 100-Spanish speaking children making various crafts and art projects. Ellen Collier and Erin Euler worked with the children through music and Bible storytelling. Their mission also included contributions to the construction of a church (laying block) and distribution of clothing to the families in the area.
“The children were sweet and loving and eager to learn,” McGuire shared. “The country was beautiful too although a bit frightening because of cultural differences. I really enjoy going on these trips.” This is the second summer the girls have participated in mission work with the church. During the summer of 2001, they traveled to the southern border of Texas where they served a community in a similar manner.
