Students write winning essays

Darlington students earned first, second, and third place in the Rome Optimist Club’s recent essay contest entitled, “When our Freedom is Threaten.” Senior Paul Kountz took first place earning him the opportunity to compete at zone level and, if he wins, area and district competitions. Darlington seniors Patrick Dennis and Rachel Wiggins took second and third place.
According to information on the Optimist Web site (www.optimist.org), the purpose of the contest, first conducted in 1928, is to give youngsters the chance to speak to the world. Nearly 2,000 clubs are participating in this year’s contest that awards more than $159,000 annually in scholarships to youth. The winner of district will receive a $650 scholarship.
