Students write essays, earn first place

In the recent Xavier Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) Essay contest, three of the four first-place winners are from Darlington Middle School. Sixth grader Ben Cantrell, seventh grader Morgan Myers, and eighth grader Clark Coleman McGehee were awarded for their writings. DAR selects one winner from each grade between fifth and eighth grade.
The Middle School submitted more than 40 essays to the contest. The essay, a required assignment for all Darlington Middle School students, needed to be between 600 and 1,000 words on the topic, "As editor of the Philadelphia Gazette, interview at least two signers of the Declaration of Independence and write an article for the July 5, 1776 edition."
Entries were submitted from Rome City and Floyd County schools. The contest was planned as a joint effort between English and social studies teachers.
