After winning a local essay contest sponsored by Barnes & Noble, rising seventh-grader Gibson Hicks will read his essay during a special reception on July 25 at 6 p.m. at the Rome store.

Hicks' essay, "My Favorite Teacher," written about the late Anne Somerville, a Darlington legend, has moved on to the regional level of the competition. Click here to read the full text of his essay.

The second- and third-place winners, also Darlington students, were rising sixth-graders Frances Fields and Sophie Stepp. They will also read their essays at the reception later this month.

Both Fields and Stepp wrote about Laura Hicks, coordinator of the PK-8 Teaching and Learning Center at Darlington. Hicks taught fifth grade in 2013-14. Download the PDF attachments at the bottom right to read the full text of their essays.
