Students Teach Lesson on Generosity

Darlington Middle School students are teaching kindness, compassion, and generosity by daily examples. Each year Middle School students contribute to the community in a variety of ways: the annual Christmas and Easter celebrations for Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center, food drives, Angel Express contributions, and recycling. This year, it seems students sought another way to impact the community. Eleven seventh-graders held a joint birthday party, but instead of receiving individual gifts, these goodhearted persons donated monetary contributions collected at the celebration totaling $1,250 to Rome Urban Ministries (RUM).
The students, all turning 13-years-old within a six-week period, held a party at Zion Farms, Monday, Nov. 27. The money given in place of personal gifts will support a food pantry and an outreach for homeless families through RUM.
Early this season, Darlington Middle School students volunteered to raise food and funds for RUM’s brown bag project –giving a truckload of food and over $1,700.
“When I received a call from Nancy Ivester (Middle School faculty) about some brown bag contributions to be picked up, I had no idea what we were in store for. Words cannot express our appreciation for your support both in groceries and donations. We were able to provide a weeks’ supply of food to countless numbers of families and are still utilizing the donations today (Tuesday, Nov. 28). You all should be proud of your school, staff, students, and parents for stepping up to the challenge.” Amy Stanfield, Rome Urban Ministries.
