Students Take Field Trip

Tours of the Atlanta’s High Museum of Art and Symphony Hall are the bulk of the fifth-grader’s annual fine arts field trip, planned for Tuesday, March 14.
At the museum, students will view the works of John Twachtman, an American Impressionist, to see how this artist challenged the artistic attitudes of his time with his unconventional compositions, innovative techniques, and his own personal interpretations of nature.
Afterwards, they will walk next door to Symphony Hall to hear a performance by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra led by Conductor David Wiley. Students will explore the difference between a melody and a motif as they learn how great composers use these elements to build exciting orchestral works.
“The enculturation of students in the fine arts begins at an early age at the Lower School, said Diane Lumpkin, Lower School music teacher. “We are aware of the importance of this facet of educating the whole child. This fieldtrip is the culmination of their learning experiences in the arts at this stage in their education.”
