Students spread holiday cheer

"I've been looking all over for you!" exclaimed Santa Claus as he embraced a little girl, giving her a piece of candy. "I'll see you on Christmas Eve."
A visit from the jolly old elf was one of the highlights of Wednesday’s Christmas party hosted by Darlington Middle School for Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center, a nonprofit, subsidized preschool. Darlington students picked out and bought gifts for the approximately 90 children from the two preschool locations in Rome. Each child received a handful of presents.
Seventh-grader Kenzie Major chose a fairy-costumed Dora the Explorer doll. "I thought if they were feeling sad they could make a wish," Kenzie said.
Jane Lyon, the pre-school’s director, said the little ones look forward to the party each year and appreciate the gifts and attention.
The youngsters get the fun of opening and receiving gifts, but the middle-schoolers enjoy the party too, said teacher Sally Muschamp, who coordinated this year's party. "We enjoy it, and the kids enjoy it," she said. "They probably have a better time than the little ones do."
The Darlington students agreed that they have fun at the party each year.
"You get the satisfaction that you've done a good thing," said eighth-grader Will Thoms.
"I feel happy when I see them smile," added classmate Saket Tiwari.
Lyon said she is touched by the efforts of the school’s students and staff members. "To me the true beauty of this is looking at the generosity of these young people," she said.
