Students share joy of Christmas with neighbors

It wouldn’t be Christmas at Darlington without two major events – Darlington Christmas hosted by the Upper School and the Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center Christmas Party. Together, both events bring about 200 children from neighboring families to Dodd Dining Room where they receive presents, enjoyed Christmas treats, and in the case of Darlington Christmas, made crafts.
Now sponsored by the “Y” Cabinet, Upper School instructor George Awsumb started Darlington Christmas over 25 years ago. Upper School students, usually three in a group, adopt a child from the School’s Sage Dining Service, ARAMARK Facility Services, or the area’s Department of Family and Community Services. Each group then tries to purchase gifts based on a child’s wish list to help make Christmas a little brighter.
Middle School’s annual Christmas party brings nearly 100 children from the Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center to campus so that the students and the Mother’s Club can lavish gifts, entertainment, and an abundance of attention on them.
LaVance Atkins, Middle School librarian, organizes that party, while Jill Pate, faculty adviser to the “Y” Cabinet, helps set up Darlington Christmas for the Upper School.
