Students Learn Cotton-Pickin' Lesson

A cotton-picking good time is not simply an old-fashioned saying to Reatha Carroll’s fourth-graders. In an effort to blend Rome’s Heritage Holidays with a social studies lesson on the southeastern United States, this Lower School class traveled to the Kibler Farm located in Cave Spring, Ga., where they learned a hands-on lesson on labor, bartering, and the importance of choosing a good location to build a town.
After encountering sweat and labor in the field, the apprentice pickers were paid their wages with vouchers that they then were able to trade for goods at a mock country store. The lesson continued as they picnicked by the spring and cave in the small community. While touring the cave, they discussed its history and significance in relation to the town.
