A total of 19 students have been busy making phone calls to alumni, grandparents and parents of alumni as a part of S.O.A.R. (Students Organized to Assist Raising—funds, that is). They are learning the art of making phone calls to people they do not know and asking them to contribute to the School’s Annual Fund.

In addition to the Jan. 24 kickoff night, students made fundraising phone calls two more nights in January and continued calling in February and March. They are also participating in two daytime phonathons to call alumni who prefer to be called at their business number and grandparents and parents of alumni who they have been unable to reach at night.

“The students are great and add a lot of enthusiasm to the program,” Lisa Nichols, who set up the S.O.A.R. program this year as a staff member for the Annual Fund and for alumni programs in the development office, said. “Mimi Sumner was unable to volunteer for S.O.A.R. phone calling, but was a great help with volunteer recruitment.”

“We are concentrating on increased donor participation,” Nichols added. “We want to get the message to our constituents that what is most important is not how much they give but that they support Darlington to the extent that they are able.”

“I think it is great that they involve students in collecting the Annual Fund,” Katie Brindell, a sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., said.

S.O.A.R. students will also participate in two phonathons in April and early May to say thank you to those who have given to the Annual Fund this year. A party is scheduled for April to celebrate their success and thank them for their efforts.
