Students Exceed Fundraising Goal

The Lower School has completed its fundraising efforts for water filters for our new friends in Guatemala. The students, faculty and families raised $1930.54 for the purchase of about 44 filters. We far exceeded our goal of purchasing 11 filters (one per classroom)!

For this project, we asked the students to be “entrepreneurial” in their approach towards raising the funds. We did not want them to ask mom and dad for the money; we wanted them to earn it themselves. 

Molly Brewer in grade 4 raised $141.60 on her own. She walked dogs on the main campus and made fried rice with one of the international students and sold it. Molly also did some extra work for Rebekah Kinney. This is a great example of a young student with a heart who went the extra mile to help others. We are very proud of Molly and her “lead by example” philosophy. This is just one of many cases where the students took this project on with gusto and enthusiasm. We are equally proud of all of our students!

The Scott family will be traveling to Guatemala during spring break in March to assist with the installation of the water filters. They will bring back some good stories and information which they will share with us in an upcoming assembly. We wish Kate, Ryland, Parker and their parents safe travels.

Special thanks to our Tiger PRIDE parents for the outstanding celebration and thanks they bestowed on Lower School faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. The gifts, food, daily treats, and the catered lunch were wonderful. When we arrived on Tuesday morning, the classroom and office doors were decorated. The Lower School has very creative and talented parents! Kudos to our co-chairs, Sandy Lester and Sheila Watkins, for an outstanding event. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I extend heartfelt thanks for a memorable Teacher Appreciation Week.

Parents, friends and teachers are cordially invited to the Sara Hightower Regional Library (Coosa Room) on Riverside Parkway on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Lindamood-Bell Learning Center is looking to opening an office in this area. They will be presenting their programs for reading, comprehension, spelling and math. They will also be discussing learning challenges that include dyslexia, hyperlexia, ADD/HD and autism spectrum disorder.
