Students crown Homecoming court

The roar of the crowd, a crisp fall breeze, bright lights, athletes fighting for a goal post, and school colors sprinkled across a spirited tapestry. Upper School students experienced Darlington’s first Homecoming in many years under just such conditions.
Events culminated with the crowning of a king, queen, prince, and princess—honors bestowed as a result of student votes. The outcomes are as follows: prince, Josh Harris; princess, Emily Butler; king, Jon Chumbler; and queen, Kia Charles.
Celebrations began Thursday evening with a dance in the wrestling room of the Huffman Center, hosted by the House Senate. Slippery Jack, a cover band made up of college boys from across the state, provided the music. The theme was "The Premiere Event, Homecoming '03 - An Evening With The Stars." To enhance the occasion, students entered the dance by walking down a red carpet that lined the entire concourse.
Friday evening, during halftime of the football game, the homecoming court was presented–each couple was escorted on the track via a faculty-driven golf cart.
Each class had representatives: freshman: Erika Binns and Steve Chumbler and Christie Doss and John Umberger; sophomore: Hope Lester and Luke Hyder and Eliza McArthur and Peter Whatley; junior: Megan Betts and Douglas Davenport, Emily Butler and Josh Harris, and Mary Becca Watson and Kip Smith; senior: Kia Charles and Jon Chumbler, Josey Goldner and Matthew Donaldson, Stephanie Hom and Paul Maxwell, and Mika Wells and Jason Smith.
“Our hope is that this event will become an annual tradition and that Kia and Jon will come back next fall to crown our new royalty,” Blythe Erlandson, head of house and faculty homecoming adviser, said. “I was so impressed by the ease at which this event became a reality. It happened because of student dedication and diligence. Josey Goldner and her committee members from the House Senate made it happen.”
