Students compete in oratorical contest

Fourteen Darlington School Middle School students participated in the Rome Breakfast Optimist Club’s annually sponsored Optimist Oratorical Contest, Feb. 11, in McCallie-Kennedy Library. According to information on the Optimist Web site (www.optimist.org), the purpose of the contest, first conducted in 1928, is to give youngsters the chance to speak to the world. This year’s contest topic is “United We Stand in Optimism.”
Nearly 2,000 clubs are participating in this year’s contest that awards more than $159,000 annually in scholarships to youth.
Darlington Middle School participants were Isabel Bonnyman, Alexandra Dodd, Monique Picon, Abby Vincent, Grier Fricks, Elizabeth Hortman, Christina Rutledge, Hannah Tillman, Margot-Catherine Wallis, Alicia Wright, Daniel Powell, Ben Cantrell, Tyler Fletcher, and Adam Diggs.
Eighth-grader Alicia Wright and seventh-grader Daniel Powell won the contest and will advance to the next level of competition in March. Runners-up were Alexandra Dodd and Ben Cantrell.
Winners at club levels can advance to zone and then possibly district levels and may be awarded medallions, plaques, or cash awards, depending upon the level achieved.
