Students catch chess fever

Watch out, she’s contagious. Students find they can’t be around Pat Waddell without catching Chess Club fever. For Waddell, being the club’s adviser is more a passion than an assignment.
The club sponsors chess tournaments throughout the year and participation has been growing rapidly. “We had about 90 people sign up for the winter tournament and we will have a spring tournament and then a House tournament,” Waddell said. “So far the girls have not been as active as the boys in the tournaments, but I am very proud to say we have some girls who are getting much better at chess.”
Ben Kwek, senior and president of the Chess Club, and History Department Chair Craig Schmidt have helped with running the tournaments. The tournaments are run like a basketball bracket tournament in that students sign up to play in the tournament and continue to play until they lose.
In the House tournaments, a trophy will be awarded to the winning House. The winner of the winter and spring chess tournaments will receive an award in the spring.
“We have had so many people ask to learn to play that we are thinking of setting up chess sets during the lunch periods for chess lessons,” Waddell said. And that’s how the virus is spread.
