Students attend leadership conferences

In 2005, several Darlington students were among the outstanding scholars from around the United States selected to participate in youth leadership conferences around the country.
Students attending National Young Leaders Conferences (NYLC) in Washington, D.C., included junior Steve Chumbler of Gaylesville, Ala.; junior Will Edwards of Rome; senior Crystal Gadishaw-Lue of Kingston, Jamaica; senior Ashley Gaulin of Rome; junior John Kagley of Frostproof, Fla.; senior Jacob Malone of Lindale, Ga.; junior Michael Schecter of Rome; and senior Hampton Williams of Tiger, Ga.
NYLC seeks to give high-achieving sophomores, juniors and seniors a greater understanding of their roles in democracy and the responsibilities of leadership. As these students meet with the men and women who shape laws and policies, they gain an inside perspective on key issues. Through interaction with Cabinet secretaries, members of Congress, diplomats, lobbyists, journalists and academicians, NYLC scholars receive direct experience and guidance that cannot be found in textbooks.
“NYLC prepares students to serve our country well, whether that means as elected officials in our nation’s capital, as active members within communities around the world or as intelligent, creative and responsible members of the work force,” said Mike Lasday, executive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC), which sponsors the conference. “Through a series of simulations, we place these young leaders in the proverbial driver’s seat on a variety of issues facing our country today. Their determination, as shown within the conference, is a good indicator of the types of leaders we will see in the future.”
According to CYLC’s Web site, participants are hand-selected for nomination by distinguished educators, mentors or CYLC program alumni, ensuring that every participant possesses the drive and determination to emerge as a future world leader.
Other students including juniors Norman Bonnyman of Rome, Marlowe Brant of Kingston, Ga., and Brett Henson of Elko, Nev., attended National Youth Leadership Forums (NYLF). Also headquartered in Washington, this organization seeks to bring various professions to life, empowering outstanding young people with confidence to make well-informed career choices. NYLF programs are held in nine cities throughout the United States.
Forums are offered in a wide variety of career fields, such as defense, intelligence, diplomacy, law, medicine and technology. Participants are nominated to attend a program by educators, organization advisors, alumni and participating institutions or through classroom surveys. Students may also be admitted through an application process. Program participants all demonstrate strong academic abilities, leadership and a strong interest in the career field being studied.
