Student art on display at FMC

Artwork by Upper School students Yena Ahn, Mary Katherine Branham and Kristen Rachels was on display at Floyd Medical Center during the month of March, as part of a special exhibit in celebration of National Youth Art Month.
“Our vision for the Arts in Medicine Program is to enhance the healing environment by introducing the Arts to our patients, their families and our staff,” said Susan C. Lavigne, expressive arts coordinator. “We recognize that art and music experiences can help in improving the physical, emotional and spiritual well being of the individuals and the communities we serve.”
The Art Gallery is located along the main corridor of the hospital across from the gift shop. It consists of nine paneled areas with a spotlight on each panel to highlight the display.
“It is our goal to exhibit art from local artists that contributes not only to the aesthetics quality of the hospital, but also to its therapeutic properties,” said Lavigne.
Art for the gallery is selected by Floyd’s Arts Advisory Group and should have a positive effect on a great majority of patients, patient families, staff and visitors; provide stress reducing restful images; have people relating to each other in positive ways when pictures have people in them; address a culturally diverse population; and reflect the overall standard of excellece that is Floyd Medical Center.
Ahn’s “Mickey Mouse,” Branham’s “River” and Rachels’ “Trees,” all acrylics were among th the works featured in the exhibit. Darlington was one of three local schools represented.
