String Program now offered in Grades 1-12

The fine arts department is pleased to announce that the Darlington String Program is now open to students in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools.
“My ultimate goal in expanding the orchestra program to all three levels is to build a quality, self sustaining program that provides a genuine experience for existing students and attracts potential students,” said Will Camp, instrumental director. “This program makes Darlington unique in our area.”
He added that the expansion will allow for continuity of instrument study between the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools in addition to providing another option for those students who may not want to study a concert band instrument.
“It is true that music makes you smarter . . . but a few classes in Lower School is not the way it works,” he said. “A student truly benefits if he or she is able to continue in music at all three levels, focusing on one particular instrument.”
The Middle School Orchestra debuted last spring, while the Upper School will perform its first full symphonic work this spring. The groups are currently working on multiple works ranging from Mozart’s “Overture to the Magic Flute” to Sammartini’s “Symphony in D Major.”
Annie Camp, who has directed the Lower School string program for the past two years, will serve as program director at all three levels. With a bachelor’s and master’s from Juilliard, Camp has performed as a cellist with LYRA String Quartet, Dal Segno Piano Trio, Da Capo String Quartet, and the all string jazz ensemble Jazz a Cordes of New York City. She also played with the Alabama Symphony for seven years and has performed with the Atlanta Symphony, Greenville Symphony, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, Lee University Chamber Orchestra, DeKalb Community Orchestra and Atlanta Chamber Orchestra.
Camp holds a teaching certificate from the New York School for Strings and implemented her own original string program in the New York Public School System through Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. In addition to directing the string program at Darlington, she is adjunct cello instructor at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., and currently teaches private lessons in Rome and Chattanooga.
The String Program for first and second grade is offered during regularly scheduled music classes, while third- through fifth-graders meet Mondays and Thursdays at 3 p.m. The Middle School program meets during fifth period and the Upper School meets during seventh period.
