Strategic plan includes manners

“Please,” “thank you,” and “yes, sir,” –these are words and phrases that too often reflect a vanishing formality or demeanor, but not at the Lower School. Expressions of kindness and respect are alive and well and can be heard all over the Lower School campus. “You will hear students referring to faculty members and staff by name and saying “yes ma’am” and “no, ma’am” assistant principal Diane Lumpkin said.
Stressing the importance of good manners and respect is part of the Lower School’s strategic plan and a goal of the teachers for students to exhibit good manners on a daily basis. “Manners are a part of what identifies Darlington Lower School students and as faculty members we are trying to incorporate an emphasis on good manners during the daily routine of academics, physical education, art, music, library and technology,” Lumpkin said. “ It is a goal of our teachers to help children become productive citizens of society.”
Faculty members and administrators set the example as part of their job and responsibility by demonstrating politeness, consideration, generosity, patience, and tolerance in their daily lives. To emphasize these lessons, Lumpkin wrote Character Education, a curriculum created to instill the core values that make lasting impressions.
Larry Muschamp, former Darlington Lower School principal and grandfather of two Lower School students, began the new program by addressing the student body on honor. After the address, students signed the Honor Roll, which will hang in Tiger Hall. As the students signed the Honor Roll they were making a promise to tell the truth, do their best, do what they say, and be trustworthy. Other topics in this series include: respect, citizenship, responsibility, caring, and, fairness.
