STAR Student gives STAR Teacher award to mother

Senior Alexandra Dodd was named Darlington’s 2009 STAR Student during an assembly Monday, Feb. 16. She selected her mother, Chemistry teacher Julia Dodd, as her STAR Teacher. The presentation was made by John Scott Husser, representing the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce.
“I felt very honored to receive the STAR Student award, and even more honored that I got to give the STAR Teacher award to my mom,” Alexandra said. “I was a little surprised when I found out I was going to get the award, and the surprised look on my mom’s face told me that she was not expecting STAR Teacher at all. The STAR Teacher award goes to the teacher that has been most influential in the STAR student’s life. In my case, this was my mom because not only is she the most influential teacher in my life, but also one of the most influential people. I think it’s really important for students to have role models who are supportive and encouraging like my mom has always been.”
Alexandra is a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Spanish Honor Society, and has taken 15 Honors and AP classes. A Furman University Scholar, she has also received the Darlington Parents Association Award, the Sewanee Club Award and the Kipp-Tillman Memorial Award. Dodd has been a member of the Math Team, Science Club, Concert Choir, Concert Band, Stadium Band, and has participated in several school musicals. She is also a member of the varsity rowing, swimming, track and volleyball teams. She frequently volunteers with community organizations such as the Hospitality House and is very involved with her church. She has also taken part in several summer programs for college credit, including Duke Marine Lab and coursework at Washington University in St. Louis.
Alexandra and Julia Dodd will be recognized publically by Al Hodge, CEO of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce and local sponsor of the STAR program, during an Exchange Club luncheon March 6. Other Rome/Floyd STAR Students and Teachers will also be introduced at this time. The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, in its 51st year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. Since its inception, the STAR program has honored more than 21,000 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic achievement. Students are selected on the basis of their SAT scores and class standing/scholastic averages.
