Star Struck in Second Grade

Star struck! This described my day in second grade. Who could have imagined this many famous people in one place at one time? I heard Benjamin Franklin talk about his groundbreaking achievements, Sitting Bull discuss his deadly battle with General Custer, and Amelia Earhart relay her vision for aviation. Abraham Lincoln, Martha Washington, Muhammad Ali, and Johnny Appleseed shared their triumphs and tragedies as well.
It was Biography Day! Students researched the lives of famous people and transformed themselves into their character. They dressed in clothing that was representative of their character’s time period, and their tales of their character’s achievements and successes left an everlasting impact on our day. I was impressed by their work and the effort they put into this project. I thought back on this day when my daughters, Jordan and Katie, were Anastasia and Queen Elizabeth, respectively.
We also celebrated stars of tomorrow. Signs and posters for Tony Pedeferri, Bill Ramsey and Thea Rosa adorned the classroom. Students were getting ready to cheer on these cyclists, as they equipped themselves for the Clocktower Classic Handcycling Race on Saturday.
After all this, students had to prepare a celebration for the most famous people of all -- moms! Muffins for Moms was just a few days away and they had to get ready. Everyone got to draw a picture of their mom and write them a special letter that they would present to them when they visited the classroom. Moms are special and we all knew that this would be a very important day so we worked really hard on these projects!
I enjoyed my day in second grade and I can't wait to visit again soon!
