SST works to prevent poor choices

In today’s teenage culture, often celebration is synonymous with alcohol or drug use. In an effort to combat this mindset and make certain teenagers in our community are safe, the Student Support Team (SST) is sponsoring an alcohol awareness week, April 28-May 2. Typically, misuse is most prevalent during annual events like dances, proms, and graduation. This awareness week is schedule prior to prom, May 3.

The kickoff takes place at Upper School assembly, April 28, in the Chapel. Events scheduled throughout the week highlight underage drinking, drug and alcohol facts, and consequences to drinking and driving. On Thursday and Friday, SST members will have a table in Dodd Dining Room where students will have the chance to sign a Prom Promise, an outward way to agree not to use drugs or alcohol at the Prom. “There will be no pressure on students to sign the promise but it will be available in the dining room,” Jill Pate, director of personal counseling, said.

Educational efforts include posters displayed across campus with statistics and facts, relevant questions in classes with prizes for those who answer correctly, and mystery events. “Two mystery events are very dramatic ways to illustrate consequences that can occur when teens choice to use alcohol or drugs.” Pate said. “It’s going to be very intense.
