The Junior-Senior Prom is an important annual event and one that the Student Support Team (SST) wants to ensure will be a special, happy memory for those who attend. The SST members know and want every student to be aware that the event could very easily be a sad memory. “Every day 48 people in the United States, one every half hour, die due to drunk-driving accidents,” Jill Pate, director of student counseling, said.
SST members have planned a week of events designed to keep students’ attention on the dangers of underage drinking and drunk driving leading up to the prom on Saturday, May 3. On Tuesday, for example, students will become players in a powerful representation of how drunk driving can end lives and destroy relationships. A wrecked car placed on campus will serve as a similar reminder throughout the week.
Other events are designed to reward students’ awareness of DUI, alcohol, and car safety facts with treats for those who know the right answers and correct behavior. On Friday, students will have the opportunity to sign a Prom Promise during fourth, fifth, and sixth periods, a voluntary agreement to not drink or use drugs and other illegal substances.
