Spring teams finish strong

As spring and the school year come to an end, Darlington School’s spring sports teams finish their seasons on triumphant notes. During the second week of May, the girl’s track team traveled to Albany for the state meet, where Darlington senior Kirby Cross broke her own school record along with the state AA record in the 3200 run, and won second place in the 1600 the following day. On the third day of the meet, the team won in the 1600 relay. The girls’ track team finished second in region and fifth in state. The boys’track team won second place in region, and will compete in the state track meet the weekend of May 17.
“2003 was an outstanding year,” Raymond Murray, Darlington boys golf team coach said. This year, the Darlington boys’ golf team won several tournaments throughout the state, including the regional championship, and finished seventh in state. The girls’ team won the regional AA championship, securing the championship for the third consecutive year.
Both Darlington boys and girls tennis teams had successful seasons, each defeating the previous year’s state champions in matches. “It was a great season, but a sad one as well because I am losing four seniors,” Darlington boys’ tennis team coach Carlos Ortega said. The boys’ tennis team won the regional championship, and the girls were runner-ups.
The girls’ lacrosse team, despite losing Lauren Jane Tharp mid-season, finished on a positive note. “Our greatest victory and accomplishment was our win over Walton High School. We entered the game as underdogs, and beat Walton 11-4. It was an emotional victory,” Darlington girls lacrosse coach Penny Braden said. The boys’ lacrosse team had a successful season as well, making it to the third round of the state championship. The highlight of the season was the team’s victory over Lovett, when the Tigers broke Lovett’s 17 game winning streak.
Darlington boys’ baseball team had a rough season, losing every game but three. “It was not due to lack of hustle and desire. There were some bad breaks and unfortunate situations that were distractions,” Darlington boys’ baseball coach Gus Bell said. “We just have to put this year behind us and start fresh next year.”
