Spend spring break in Costa Rica

For the third consecutive year, Environmental Science and Natural History teacher Owen Kinney will host an 8-day spring break trip to Costa Rica. Darlington students, parents and friends are invited to participate.
“Our tropical adventure will give participants an opportunity to experience the unique natural areas and culture of this beautiful Central American country,” said Kinney. “Our journey, beginning in the capital, San Jose, will carry us to rich tropical rain forests, an active volcano and the white sands of the Caribbean.”
The trip will depart Saturday, Feb. 26, from Atlanta. Travelers will arrive in the capital city of San Jose in the mid-afternoon, rendezvous with local naturalist guide Ingrid Ayub and journey to Sarapiquis Centro Neotropico on the Caribbean Slope.
Over the next two days, the group will explore the lowland rainforest at La Paz Waterfall Gardens with Ayub and walk the suspended bridges through the Tirimbina Biological Reserve, one of the largest tracts of pre-montane rainforest left in the country. The group will also paddle through riparian jungle on the whitewater of the Rio Sarapiquis.
The following day, the group will depart for Puerto Veijo on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast. On the way, they will visit Volcano Poas, an active volcano and one of the country’s highest peaks. The group will arrive at the beach in the early afternoon and sample the ethnic cuisine at Casa Camarona.
The next three days will be spent in Puerto Veijo, where the group will snorkel in the among the reefs at Cahuita National Park, take surfing lessons in one the world’s most famous surfing locales and hike along Caribbean shores in the unspoiled maritime rainforests. They will also ride a zip-line through the rainforest canopy at Almonds and Corals resort, browse the local marketplace, go in search of crocodiles, manatees and other exotic tropical wildlife at Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and visit Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve for a little Costa Rican culture.
The 8-day adventure will end Saturday with a return to the spectacular shops and marketplaces surrounding San Jose.
Cost is $2,200 per person, which includes roundtrip airfare, transportation in Costa Rica and to and from Darlington, all group activities, National Park entrance fees, all meals in Costa Rica (20 meals), salary and tips for a full-time driver and naturalist guide and rafting guides and equipment. This price excludes individual water sports, souvenirs, optional day trips other than those listed on itinerary and Costa Rican exit tax.
