Spelling Bee winners set for area competition

Eighth graders Claire Davis and Jeffrey Porter are poised to win the area Spelling Bee competition to be held in Atlanta on Feb. 12, after winning Round III of Darlington’s Middle School Spelling Bees. Mary Al-Sayed, seventh grade, and Baylee Tudor, eighth grade, stand ready in the wings as alternates.
In order to qualify for the area competition, the two winners and two alternates took a written spelling test given to all students in their English classes as Round I of the Middle School’s Spelling Bee. The top 27 spellers in Round I went on to a second written test for Round II. The eight winners of Round II competed in Round III on Jan. 29.
Round I winners were: sixth graders Aabhas Amar, Brody Anderson, Maddie Cannon, Angie Davidson, Brian Davidson, Steffanie Eberhard, Forrest Manis, Connor McWhorter, Jess Milner, Clay Phillips, Knox Strickland, and Martha Tucker; seventh graders Isabel Bonnyman, Mary Al-Sayed, Monique Picon, Anna Loveless, Amee Eubank, Patrick Pierson, Ian McKenzie, Dylan Nichols, and Matthew Glover; and eighth graders Sarah Clements, Claire Davis, Hannah Dodd, Eric Gautier, Jeffrey Porter, and Baylee Tudor.
Round II winners were: Aabhas Amar, sixth grade, Mary Al-Sayed, seventh grade, and Sarah Clements, Claire Davis, Hannah Dodd, Eric Gautier, Jeffrey Porter, and Baylee Tudor, eighth grade.
If a Darlington Middle School student wins the area Spelling Bee, he or she will advance to the state competition for independent schools in Macon, Ga. The state winner will represent Georgia independent schools in Washington, D.C. in the national Spelling Bee this spring.
