Spelling Bee Winners go to District

Everyone competes in the first round of Middle School’s annual spelling bee by taking a written test in English classes, but it’s the top spellers from each grade who move to the second round. The winners from the 30 who participated in the second round were all eighth graders. The last round produced the winners who competed in the district spelling bee on Feb. 15 at St. Jude’s Catholic School in Atlanta: Payton Bradford, first place; Jonathan Lane, second place; Michael Webster, first runner-up; Jessica Sloan second runner-up; Brett McDaniel, third runner-up; Matthew Payne, fourth runner-up; and Matt Floyd, fifth runner-up.

The state spelling bee for independent schools will be held on March 2 in Macon, Ga. The state winner will represent Georgia Independent Schools in Washington, D.C. in the national spelling bee this spring.
