Spanish Club celebrates Three Kings Day

Upper School hallways were lined with shoes during seventh period today as Spanish Club members encouraged the celebration of El Dia de Los Reyes (Thee Kings Day).
“Spanish-speaking countries typically celebrate El Dia de Los Reyes with gift giving,” said Kimberly Pichardo, Upper School Spanish teacher. “In many countries, children place their shoes outside the night before, kind of like stockings, to have them filled with treats and surprises by the Three Kings as they pass their pueblo.”
This year, all Upper School students were invited to participate in the celebration by lining their shoes against the wall outside their seventh period classroom. During the last half of the period, students in Clara Hoellerbauer’s Spanish II class filled the shoes with goodie bags containing candy and a note explaining the significance of the holiday.
“I think it’s important for students to recognize and understand the traditions of other cultures because the United States, more and more every day, is a land of diverse peoples and cultures,” said Pichardo. “If students celebrate the differences of world cultures while in school, I believe they will be more tolerant and understanding adult citizens. With 40 million Spanish speakers in the United States, Hispanics are now the largest minority in our country. Understanding more about cultural differences will hopefully help Darlington students be more conscientious community members in their daily lives.”
