Soccer Teams in Playoffs

Boys Varsity Soccer
In the first game of the Area 5-AA/A playoffs, the boys varsity soccer team won its 12th consecutive game Tuesday, April 20, defeating Villa Rica 6-0, a team it had beaten 12-1 Tuesday, April 13. The Tigers, who have not lost a game since the season opener against Dalton, advanced to the area championship, to be played against Calhoun Friday, April 23, at Darlington.
Scoring for the Tigers were Mo Shideed (2), Will Young (2), Barrett Carden, and Yohei Ohta.
“We are enjoying a very good spring during which our teams have posted strong records,” said Head Coach Gordon Neville. “As we move into area playoffs, the anticipation of tougher challenges raises the level of excitement for our second season.”
In the final game of the regular season, Saturday, April 17, the boys team defeated Rome 2-0. After battling to a scoreless first half, Mo Shideed and Hermano Souto-Neto scored the game’s only goals. The team completed the regular season 11-1 overall, 8-0 in Area 5-AA/A.
“We are deeply appreciative of all who are contributing so unselfishly towards making this a most successful season,” Neville said.
The Tigers defeated Cartersville 5-2 Thursday, April 15, with three goals from Souto-Neto and two from Young.
In a game Friday, April 9, in Cleveland, Tenn., Souto-Neto scored three goals in route to a 4-1 victory. Richard Bradford scored the other goal.
Boys Junior Varsity Soccer
The boys junior varsity team finished its season 9–1, outscoring its opponents 48-6. The team also won both the preseason jamboree and a mid-season invitational tournament.
“Even at the end of the season, several kids were called up to varsity,” Head Coach Mark Gibbons reported. “Some games we played with only 14 or 15 players, and we still kept pace.”
Gibbons commended the achievements of Stephen Whatley on offense, Frank Stegall on defense, and George Barron at midfield. The highlight of the season was the opener against Grady, a 7-2 win: “We played great soccer, came out with intensity, and set the tone for season,” Gibbons said. The team is 19-2 the past two years.
Girls Varsity Soccer
The Lady Tigers defeated Mt. Paran 5-0 in the first round of the Area 5-AA/A playoffs Tuesday, April 20. Scoring for the girls were Marwa Kharsa (2), Camilla Yamada (2), and Ashley Clark.
The second round of the tournament is at Walker Friday, April 23, a rematch of a 2-2 tie played earlier in the season. Walker, tied with Darlington in the area standings at the end of the regular season, topped the Tigers with a tie-breaker based on the number of goals allowed during the season.
“If we can remain focused and play up to our potential, we can go far,” Head Coach Steve Hall said of his team.
The Lady Tigers finished the regular season with a 12-1-1 record, after defeating Model 11-0 Thursday, April 15. Merrie Carol Angell led the Tigers with three goals. Other goals were scored by Clark, Yamada, Kharsa, Reagen Lowrey, Helen Davis, Anna Ward Martens, and Maggie Hackett.
The Tigers, who won most of their games during the season by wide margins, defeated LaFayette 9-0 Wednesday, April 14, and Mt. Paran 7-1 Tuesday, April 13.
During the regular season, the team amassed 88 goals, allowing less than a goal per game in the 14-game schedule. The 88 goal output is a new school record.
“This team has been a masterpiece in the making,” Hall said. “The 11 seniors have played together for years and know intuitively where to go with the ball and who will be there waiting to receive it.”

The climax of the season was a victory against Ft. Payne, the girl’s first victory ever against this team, which usually finishes its season undefeated. The girls, coached by Tony Lopez, were strong on defense all season, led by goalie Reagin Stuckey and sweeper Katie Gerhard.
