Soccer Ends Well

Girls Varsity Soccer Kicks Rivals
The girls varsity soccer completed an impressive 14-4 season, losing to St. Pius 11-1 in the playoffs April 26. During regular play, they scored 86 goals, while allowing 21. In the final game, goal tenders Reagin Stuckey and Anna Sargent achieved 25 saves. And Marwa Kharsa and Rachel Wiggins came close to breaking the individual scoring record.
“Everyone thought this would be a rebuilding year,” said assistant coach Mark Gibbons. “That couldn’t have been farther from the truth. We had a great season.”
Girls JV Soccer Show Ability
Darlington’s junior varsity girls soccer team completed the season at 4-3-1. “The team improved greatly over the year,” Coach Tony Lopez said.
They began February 17 with a loss against Osborn, 0-3. They lost again, 2-1, against Walker, Feb. 22, and then tied, scoreless, with Cartersville Feb. 24. The team won by forfeit against Marietta, March 16.
The girls beat Dalton in strong competition, 3-2, March 21. “We were down 2-0 with 15 minutes left in the game. They came back to win it 3-2. It was a heroic effort,” Lopez said.
On March 30, they lost to Trion Varsity, 6-2. Darlington then won their final scheduled game against Gordon Central by forfeit.
Boys Varsity Soccer Finishes Strong
The boys varsity soccer finished second in Area 5, 8-0-1. During regular play, the team’s record was 9-4-1; including post season, the team finished at 10-6-1.
The Tigers won their first three games. Led by two goals from senior Stephen Collier, two goals by Blake Tharp, two by Johnny Dodge, and one by Kevin Routman, they beat Central of Carrollton 7-0, Feb. 18. Carrollton was the next opponent, and four goals by senior Mo Shideed led them to an 8-2 victory. At Lafayette, the Tigers’ scoring was shared by Tony Boone, Shideed, and Stephen Whatley in a 3-0 victory.
They played away for six straight games in March. They defeated Chattooga 5-1. Next, at Dalton, March 21, Tharp’s lone goal gave the Tigers a 1-1 tie. The Tigers defeated Carrollton, March 24, in the Sequoyah Invitational Soccer Tournament. On March 25, during the Sequoyah tournament, Darlington suffered its first loss of the season, 2-3 to Sequoyah, despite goals by Walsh and Shideed. Villa Rica fell to the Tigers 3-1, March 27. Lovett shut them out, 0-2, on March 31.

Tuesday, April 7, the Tigers lost their first region game to Calhoun 0-3. Then they traveled north, April 13, to defeat Trion 9-0. The final game of the regular season, April 15, saw the Tigers defeat Coosa by a score of 5-0.
