Soccer Academy boys win in Charleston

After advancing to the semi-finals, Darlington School Soccer Academy U-18 Boys finished third at the two-day Charleston College Showcase Tournament in late October.
The team started off the tournament with a 0-0 result against the DSC Green Team (Rock Hill, S.C.)
“Neither Darlington nor DSC Green could get many shots on frame, as the game was highlighted with physical play in the middle and strong tackling in the back led by Zach Sinkular, Alex Milhous and Casey Butler,” said Soccer Academy Director Chad Liddle. “Additionally, David Addison led the way in the defense with three saves, recording his first shutout of the tournament.”
In the second game, the Soccer Academy scored two first-half goals and one in the second half, defeating Lexington (S.C.) Soccer Club 3-0.
According to Liddle, Garrett Webster started off the scoring in the 20th minute with a blue collar goal off a Lexington defender. The scoring continued in 35th minute when Tumani Steede bent in a 35-yard free kick over the goalkeeper’s head and into the back of the net. In the second half, Steede struck again with a goal into the left side of the net from 10 yards out. Led by Ryan Black and his two key breakaway saves, the Soccer Academy recorded its second shutout of the tournament.
Darlington was pitted against Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Soccer Club in the semi-final match. Mount Pleasant scored three goals in the first half, as they downed the Soccer Academy 3-1.
“In the second half, the Soccer Academy finally broke through with a goal in the 60th minute by Josh Trammell,” said Liddle. “The goal was set up by an outstanding individual effort by German Ospina, who beat two guys in the box and passed a perfect ball to Trammell inside the 6-yard box.”
The Soccer Academy continued to have the better of the play in the second half, creating numerous chances at goal, but Mount Pleasant’s defense was up to the task, stifling Darlington’s chance for a comeback.
