Six advance in Optimist Club Oratorical Contest

A preliminary round of the Rome Breakfast Optimist Club Oratorical Contest was held Thursday, Feb. 17 at the Middle School. The contest, first conducted in 1928, aims to give young people the chance to speak to the world.
Participants included sixth-graders Ansley McDurmon and Hiram Johnson; seventh-graders Brisha Askew, Jason Bloom, Ali Harton, Chandler Holcombe, Tre’ Langston, Zach Martin, Will Thoms and Jesse Tutor; and eighth-grader Morgan Reynolds. This year’s topic was “My Future is Bright Because …”
“To prepare for the competition, I stay after school and practice with the participants the week before. They also have the opportunity to practice in English class,” said English teacher Nancy Ivester.
The top three girl and boy contestants were Askew, Harton and McDurmon and Bloom, Johnson and Martin, respectively. These students will compete against Pepperell at the Floyd County Board of Education on March 14. Club-level winners can advance to zone and then possibly district levels, and may be awarded medallions, plaques, or cash awards, depending upon the level achieved.
