Singers present Traditions of Christmas

Darlington School’s singing groups came together Sunday, Dec. 10, to present the annual Traditions of Christmas concert at 4 p.m. in Morris Chapel.
“The Traditions of Christmas concert provides something for every listener, from the standards we love and wait to hear each year to newly composed works that heighten our anticipation for the holiday season,” said Dan Bishop, chairman of the fine arts department at Darlington.
This year’s concert featured special guest, The Roman Festival Brass, under the direction of Jerry Pollard, with performances by the Upper School’s award-winning Concert Choir and its ensembles, the Darlingtones and the Random Notes, all directed by Bishop, as well as the Middle School’s award-winning Chorus, directed by Kim Tunnell.
The program included many standard holiday favorites, such as two movements from “The Nutcracker Suite,” “Carol of the Bells,” “Still, Still, Still,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” The concert also featured “Christmas Canata (Sinfonia Sacra),” a mini-cantata written by 20th century composer, Daniel Pinkham, for SATB chorus, two brass choirs and organ.
“We were so pleased to have The Roman Brass and Joan Hill, organist, join us on this most exciting work,” said Bishop.
The event closed with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” sung by the Concert Choir and Darlington alumni.
