Shaw Industries executive to speak at Career Day

Julius Shaw ’72, Shaw Industries, Cartersville, Ga., will be the keynote speaker for the Alumni Council-sponsored Career Day, Jan. 14, in the Chapel. More than 30 speakers from across the country are planning to speak on a wide range subjects based on feedback from students about careers in which they think they may be interested. Students register for the topics of their choice via their confidential Web student pages.
Professionals, mostly alumni, will travel from far and near to the campus, as they do each year, to share their career experiences with students. “Participating in Career Day is a good chance to show students that the things they are learning now will have practical use in the future. It shows what diverse fields graduates go into,” Rob Monroe ’87, attorney, said when he spoke at the 2002 Career Day.
Career Day benefits students and the guest speakers. Alumni are able to share their wisdom with students while giving back to the School. Students get a chance to listen and talk with experts –obtaining a better understanding of their career interests.
The Alumni Council has scheduled Career Day 2003 for January 14. “We’re always looking for Career Day volunteers –parents, grandparents, and alumni to speak about their careers,” Michael Van Cise, gift officer for alumni giving, explained. “We want to give students the best possible experience so we would like to have a large list of volunteers from which to select.”
